The steering wheel starts to turn right as soon as the truck moves forward. As soon as it starts to back up it turns to the left. I checked all the front end parts when I had the front end jacked up all tight.
Hey Gary, maybe service that power steering pump, change the oil, pump all the old out and refill, almost sounds like it is bypassing if it is so pronounced in turning.
Pretty easy to check the alignment with a string off the back wheels if you are careful and precise. Actually do that to align mine and it works very well.
Guess you are greased up good in all those front components??
Yellercat. I am going to change the P/S pump. I know they have valves in there that maybe are going bad or gone ..That is the only thing left. When it turns left or right both wheels stand straight up. Got out and looked. Gotta wait for some cooler weather down here in SC. Thanks for the replies.
Yes sir, you are welcome! Know what you mean about the heat, we have it here in Arkansas too. Bet you get it fixed with that p/s pump. Let us know how it turns out and good luck!
OK guys. I put on the new pump, did the bleeding etc. and guess what. took it on my driveway and it still turns to the right. Back up and it turns to the left. I'll have to put on my thinking cap again.
son-of-uh-mother! I'm just grasping at straws, could rear end be moving on you? Not that you put lift on truck, but we use to call it 'walking the dog' when you seen a lifted truck not tracking itself, could rear end components be worn and moving enough to go right(driving forward) or go left (when backing up)
It is a stock F-150 I bought new. Tomorrow I will be looking at it again including the rear. What's driving me crazy is one day every thing was fine and the next day it started doing the problem.
Sure sounds like some component 'broke' , or broke loose from where its supposed to be. Maybe inspect for any signs of back and forth movement where ANYTHING connects together under there. Would even look under the hood at the shock towers, etc from above.
Would try to change from forward to reverse while applying the brake to listen and see if you might hear something to give you a clue, but not from the brakes especially.
Really interested in what you find this out to be.
