Hard starts

For the last couple of months, I've been dealing with an intermittent hard start, that is becoming more frequent. When it happens it's almost always first thing in the morning, but it has happened after sitting all afternoon too.

Fuel pressure is 60psi. Batteries are Bosch 850cca, one is a year old and tests at 890cca, the other is going on three years and tested at 760cca. Battery voltage is in the high elevens first thing in the morning. IPR jumps to 850psi immediately upon cranking. Injectors, starter, FICM, standpipes, and dummy plugs are all original with 263k on the clock.

Any insights or suggestions as to where to look next?

What is icp(hpop) pressure when cranking? Does it hit the 500 threshold for starting right away or take time to build?

An 03 does not have dummy plugs, so you can rule that out.

Check/watch FICM sync when you are experiencing the hard start.

I'm pretty sure I knew that, but thanks for confirming Mark. One less thang...

It sure would be nice to have a scan gauge for that. I'm discovering that my Edge Evolution is sorely lacking in PIDS. Gonna have to pull out the laptop and test with AE every morning until I hit pay dirt. That's if AE has a FICM sync PID. Guess I'll find out tomorrow.

I would still question the batteries at any thing low like that.

Unless he means at wait to start or mis-typed. Otherwise, you’re right Sean, there’s an issue.

There shot. You need to do them as pairs.
If you only replace the worst one the one you don't will pull a new battery
down to it's level and in effect shorten it's life and capacity.

Didn't have a very hard start this morning, but here's what AE told me:

FICM sync - Showed 0 until truck started then showed 1
FICM Logic Power - Bounces back and forth from 13v to 13.5v
FICM Vehicle Power - 13.5v
FICM Main Power - KOEO 47.5v, KOER 48 - 48.5v

For some reason AE shows all the higher numbers in red as if they're a bad thing.

No there not Sean. Key on, wait to start GP drawdown will bring the volts under 12. Admittedly with those CCA values, there are not in their prime.

My testing was all done in the winter to have the worst conditions for the batteries, so I would go a little lower.

Chris, that drove me crazy too until I learned to ignore the red flag.

Speaking of red flags, I just changed the fuel pump in the wife's Escape because it was hard starting and AE showed the fuel pump duty cycle at 100%. After the swap, AE still shows 100% duty cycle even though the hard starts are fixed. I posted in the FTE Escape forum and was told that's normal. Wasted a few hours tracking down circuits and testing over that! Even the Delphi tech support guy said it shouldn't be 100%.

Maybe prime was a poor choice of words. Midlife?

Here's my collection of readings, 7 through 10 are new at the store, the last two are my 2016 Walmarts (E6 date code) from my truck, but they've been in storage, well, for a while. The second one at 655 is called out as bad for an 850.

Wow! Talk about enlightening. I thought 890 was as good as new.

I'll never look at batteries the same. Thanks for posting Jack. Time to start shopping.

You got some time. It won’t be until cold temps when they get stressed.

I used to mostly check batteries with a refractomerter, until I couldn’t remove vent caps. It was Randy who turned me onto that battery checker, and it’s much easier then taking batteries to the store to get checked. It taught me more about charging and keeping them up with a deep charge so they don’t degrade. If I’m parking for a week, a maintenance charger goes on. And having a dozen batteries to maintain, I could easily justify the tool.

The one I bought, it’s $17 cheaper now.

Refractometer, like the one I have.

Forgot to add, I now take that tool with me when buying batteries so I can choose the highest capacity one, or in the case of our trucks the two highest and possibly balanced. That’s what I was doing at Walmart, then I thought, I should show this!
