6 Volt Generator for 292

Hey guys. I was wondering if there are new or rebuilt 6 volt generators available that will work in a 292? My 53 has a 292 in it and is going to be all 6 volt positive ground. I already have a new generator voltage regulator and wiring for a generator so I wanted to see if there was a generator option instead is switching to a alternator. Thanks

I believe a '54 generator will work for you.

Yikes! That's not a generator, that's a small, el-cheapo alternator stuffed in a case, designed to look like a generator. $500 (+ shipping, and whatever your governor's cut). I doubt they are positive ground? I didn't check.

Were it me, I'd find a good used 6 volt generator off that auction site or a junkyard. They are cheap, because the demand for 6 volt units is about nonexistent. Shipping might be kind of high. Then rebuild it yourself, it's pretty simple. Bearings and brushes, basically. Maybe someone here at FTE has one they'd let you have at a decent cost. Not too many die-hard 6 volt enthusiasts out there left. Be sure to use nothing less than 00 ("double ought") battery and ground cables for everything.

Yikes! That's not the one I thought. This is the one I meant.

That's better, though they still want $229 + $200 core. He doesn't have a core.

That could be a problem unless he could find one in an old wrecking yard. Maybe C/L or Vintage Truck Market.

Is the generator for a 292 different than the 223? I converted mine to 12V and have the generator in a box somewhere.

I thought the OHV engine generators had mounting ears on the end frames, and the flatties used the strap-on bracket. No?

We aren't talking flattie. 223 6 cyl gen is the same as a y block 272 292 etc

Thanks everyone. I found one out of a 1955 292 Mercury with all the bracketry which I needed as well for $50. It seems like that should get me going. Thanks again!

Everything I can find online shows them as being the same. I will try and find the one I have and get a pic of it.
