So it seems that the uphill power loss and pinging issues I've been having while trying to tow may be due to the tune. 5 Star was nice enough to send me a new tow tune yesterday but now I'm having problems with the SCT X4. When hooked up to the laptop last night we did a check for automatic updates. It showed 3 different file names in red that were not current. So we did the update and it said it was successful. Now this morning we tried to load my new 89 tow tune and it gives a device communication error on the X4 and on the laptop screen it says it's trying to connect to a device and then device not found, connect a device. Tried different USB cables and no difference. SCT has no customer service hours on weekends just an emergency support link to click and give all of the pertinent info and wait for a response. I'm hoping this won't involve sending the unit back as we need to be ready to camp next week. Has anyone else experienced this issue with their X4 and what was the outcome? Thanks
I tried to return my 2011 6.2l to stock with my SCT/5 star tuner back in February. Went through all of the SCT updates first, and it froze up mid update.
Got a “general error 11061” when I hooked it up to the truck. I have the files backed up on the computer, but SCT says they are worthless (which makes no sense).
Sent an email to Mike at 5 Star to see if he had any advice , but he wouldn’t respond, so I haven’t done anything with it
I wasn’t having problems with the installed tune; it just wasn’t adding anything to the truck, so I just wanted to return it to stock.

Just a thought.....check your battery voltage. If the voltage is too low, the device is supposed to not communicate (in case the battery dies in the middle of loading the files).

Thanks Seville but it's when I connect to the laptop that I'm getting the comm error not the truck. At this point I would be afraid to hook to the OBBD II port on the truck.

Whoops...didn’t catch that the first read through.
Hooking it to the obd port to test if it communicates with the truck shouldn’t cause any issues because it won’t actually do anything until you make selections (but I do understand your concern). If it does connect to the truck (ie: no errors and the menu comes up), just disconnect it and reconnect it to the computer to see if it somehow reset.
I had that issue about a month back. I did have to call in to SCT during business hours and they uploaded a beta firmware. You’ll need a laptop with WiFi and the tuner connected to the laptop via usb.

Got through to SCT this mo8and after about an hour and a half the tech got it fixed , no more device comm error. He had to delete all of the tuner's software and reload it. I then proceeded to reload my 5 Star tunes and then went to hook up to the vehicle. Now I get a general error 11081, look up data is missing. Back on the phone waiting at number 31 in the queue. Very frustrating.

After about another 2 hr of wait time I got through to a different tech who said it needed an automatic update run again. He started it via TeamViewer but said he couldn't wait for it to finish but it should all be fine when I hook back to the vehicle. Guess what....now it has a general error code of 11085, required tune files not found. Came back in, hooked to laptop and it shows my tunes are loaded on device. I removed the runes then reloaded and hooked back to vehicle. Same 11085 code. Tried calling SCT but it says all tech support busy and disconnects. Then tried entering the prompt for dealer support and got through. Scolded for calling that line and was told I was flagged and if I called that line in the future they would just transfer me to end of the regular queue. He reset something and said to try and hook up again and that I may get the earlier 11081 code and if I do then rerun auto update which I'm doing now so we'll see. They said if it goes back to 11085 code I will have to send it back. Normal turnaround is 7-10 days so I won't have for my camping trip.
When My SCT tuner got corrupt from the updates described above, my recollection when I contacted SCT was that they told me that 5Star would have to reload the tunes because the backups I had on my computer wouldn’t be recognized.
That made no sense to me, because what’s the point of backups then? I still had my original email from 5 Star with the tunes though that I figured I could use. If you got your tunes via email, maybe try loading those on your SCT device vs loading from your computer backup
However, my issue was I wanted to reload my stock file from the backups. Never got that far though because I got an error when I plugged it into the truck to see if it would read my stock file. Dropped it at that point snd haven’t done anything further.

Well the update failed and now back to device comm error again. SCT said my tuner is over a year old now so out of warranty and I would have to pay for repairs most likely plus shipping to SCT. Maybe 5 Star will give me a break on another new one.

Got a new replacement tuner coming on Friday from 5 Star. They gave me a significant discount and loaded my tunes on it before they shipped it out. Gotta say Mike, Aaron and the rest of the 5 Star team deliver awesome customer service.
