Anyone know how difficult it is to replace that shaft? I am having trouble finding a transmission anywhere close to my location. Those links to ones in Springfield and Joplin are 5 hours away......

Is there a state or a large city closer to you? Just go to this site Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market and plug in your info, pick transmission, it will ask you which one, and then it will list anyone who might have it. I haven't done any research on it, but I bet that shaft is not cheap new. And you need some special pullers and tools sometimes to get the trans apart.

Ok....I THINK I found a t19 in Kansas City....The man says it is currently in a 1987 F350, and that it has a PTO port on the driver's side. The rest of the truck seems to match mine (460, 2WD, dually, etc...). The only thing that bothers me is he says it had s "Brake drum or shield thing" on the rear of it...
Is this gonna work?

With the tail mounted parking brake, it may work for a 4x4 but I don't think you can use it without a teardown and output shaft change. Since you are short one of those it complicates that option.

Others can confirm this, or may know different.

If he modified his driveshaft, could he make it work? It sounds like this transmission is in a superduty. They had rear disc brakes and the parking brake was on the output of the transmission. He could also get that trans, go buy a transfer case with the proper output, and pull the parking brake off and put the transfer on it and then hook the driveshaft up. Still would have to probably modify the driveshaft, but it would give him low range which is really useful for backing up heavy loads.

The tailshaft housing will be different, as it have a flat mounting surface for what sounds like a parking brake. This may not be a huge deal, as you could just remove the drum mechanism and keep that tailshaft housing.

Two possible complications:

The overall length may be different. You may have to have your existing driveshaft reworked to compensate.

The donor U-joint yoke may be different, too. You may have to reuse your existing yoke, but only if the bore and spline count are the same.

The transmission he is looking at is the same as a 4x4 model. The parking brake can be taken off and a transfer case will bolt right on.

OP is 4x2, imo he should hold out for 4x2 trans.

OK guys! I found a used transmission about 3 hours away last week. I got a few parts switched over and a gasket or two replaced while I could. Today, a couple of Amish neighbors helped R&R the transmission. It runs/shifts better than it has in years! I THINK this one is geared a little different - seems to run a lot smoother down the highway, but it shifts like a dream now! Thanks for all the help!

It isn't geared differently. There was only one set of ratios produced for that transmission.
