I have a 1986 F-350 with 4 speed. The truck has dual wheels, 460, and a dump bed. Today, I heard a "thunk" and the truck refuses to move! It shifts into all gears, but does not move. The drive shaft is not turning, either. Everything else sounds good/normal. I as GUESSING, but I THINK it is the output shaft. I am wondering what transmission I have - as there are no tags, and the door post tags are unreadable or gone. Any one have any idea what I have, or what would be the best option on another transmission?
No strange sounds, everything SOUNDS and FEELS normal....Also, what is the wire that attaches to the top/rear of the trans (NOT the speedo cable...)? I noticed it was unhooked for some reason....

2WD? If 4WD, the transfer case may have jumped into neutral.
If the problem isn't with the transfer case, the transmission's 1-2 shift fork may have broken. The shifter action may still feel somewhat normal, perhaps a bit lighter, but that's because the 1-2 shift rail is still locking in the detents.
To test this theory, try starting out in 3rd gear. You don't actually have to get the truck going, just see if the engine bogs down and the driveshaft tries to turn.
If the 1-2 shift fork has broken, this is a relatively easy repair. You only have to remove the shift tower, not the entire transmission. The cab floor should have an access panel on the transmission hump.

Not very likely. On the ultra rare chance you managed to break the output shaft, it would have made a horrendous grinding noise as the two broken halves rubbed against each other with the engine running.
It is a 2WD....The thing DOES seem to shift easier.....I will try and go tomorrow and see what I can see....Hope it is an "easy" fix...
I'm also pretty sure this is a T19 - the PTO mount is on the driver's side (not sure if it has one on both sides - will look tomorrow).

Welllll….just got back from pulling things apart - everything was in good condition...EXCEPT....when we unhooked the front U-joint, the yoke pulled out of the tailpiece. Yup - tailshaft broke off cleaner than clean!
Question - can that shaft be replaced without tearing into the transmission itself? How hard of a job is it? I have a broken down USMC vet, with a bad back, bum shoulder, fake knees, and deaf in one ear (me), and an Amish mechanic.....
I will get a photo, but I am POSITIVE the shaft is broken! The nut is still attached to broken shaft in the yoke, and the yoke is sitting on the dining room table, being stared at by my wife......
