While going through some junk F1 parts I found the lower splash pan from my 49 that was never installed..... plan is to recondition and install it but not sure what's involved. Do I need to remove anything on the front grill / bottom valance to get this in place? Can you post a photo of how it fits?
From what I recall it's a pretty straightforward install. I don't think you have to remove anything, just slip it in place and run the bolts in. I think I have one of those laying around since I fabbed my own radiator mount. I drove around for years without one and in heavy traffic my engine would start to get a bit warm. Once I fabbed an upper and lower valance to direct all the air through the radiator I haven't had any over heating issues at all.
I'm curious why there are two holes in it? One for the draft tube, and one for the radiator drain? But the radiator drain is on the front side of my radiator.
Crank hole and rad drain. The seal goes toward the radiator and it bolts to the rear edge of the part below the grille and to the inner fenders.
It is on an angle when in place
I'll try sliding it into place from the top, might have to remove the horn for more room to work. Not sure why it has the crank hole .... is the other hole for clearing the drain petcock?
AFAIK, the splash pan is screwed to the lower lip of the front crossmember and to the frame rails on the side, it totally mounts from underneath. Or else I'm misunderstanding which piece this is?
Ross,
On the 48-50 trucks the lower valance bolts to the front clip, not to the frame. You can kind of see it in this pic
Here's a pic of the area with the lower filler removed. You can see where it bolts across the lower valance and up the inner fender panels.
I would think you could snake this piece up from the bottom and twist it into place and bolt it all together. There is just a rubber seal between it and the lower part of the radiator/radiator support. I'm not using the factory radiator mount in mine so the piece wouldn't fit.
Never knew there was a pan that went under the front of the engine, checked the Web and found out it's called a Engine Splash Pan PT. #7RC-6775-A, will fit 48-52 F series trucks, learn more things everyday on FTE forum! Thanks for posting the photos.
