Hi all, I have a 95 7.3 automatic. Sometimes when it’s cold when I put it in reverse it feels like the torque converter isn’t slipping anymore. I bought this truck used and it has 315,000 miles on it. I’ve had it for a couple years. When I bought it they said the transmission was rebuilt about 30,000 miles ago
Any idea what would cause this to happen? Thanks
Without receipts to document it, you probably have a 300k trans. People say anything when selling a vehicle.
25 years and 300k is going to be nearing the end of its service life. Internal seals breakdown, not just clutch material.
Anyway, does the OD light flash? Any codes? Does your issue(s) occur at certain temperatures?
The MLPS on the side of the case is a known failure point of that trans. I would also clean the case connector with Deoxit as well as PCM. Then follow Knottyrope's thread about cleaning ALL battery connections.
The MLPS can't cause this issue, no matter how well or poorly it's working.
The cause of this is low pressure to the torque converter. That can be caused by low trans fluid, loose/missing internal filter, worn seals on the input shaft, or a worn pump.
If the fluid isn't low you can put a 0-350 PSI gauge in the test port on the driver's side of the trans and check the pressure at idle in neutral and in gear. Also, check it when it's showing the problem.
Yeah I really don’t know how many miles the transmission has on it. I was just pointing out what that guy told me. I always hear bad things about these transmissions but if it has 300,000 miles then those rumors are wrong. It doesn’t throw any codes. It only really seems to do this before it’s really warmed up. I think I’ll rent a gauge. Thanks for the info.
