Thank you for the post currently working on an 83 Bronco and I have no power to anything when I turn the key I pulled the ignition switch at bottom of the column it was in pieces but I haven’t installed it yet so hoping that’s the problem.
"Green wire is on the "hot" 12 volt terminal (with the wire that comes from the positive battery).
It goes through the firewall and to one side of the push button ignition switch.
The black wire is connected to the ignition terminal that activates the solenoid magnet. It runs with the green wire through the firewall to the other side of the ignition"
Green is hot and goes to the switch... Black returns from the switch to the starter activation pole of the starter relay (starter solenoid). The key still needs to be in the run position to start.
I changed those large eyes on the wires to something more appropriate... This was just to make sure it worked.
Been two years... still working... and the key works too. The auto shifter was going too far past park and not engaging the neutral safety switch.
I posted about this on another forum the day I did it... June 10th 2020.
Had the same symptoms as the OP... and I thought linkage too. But this is my farm truck and a half hour workaround served my needs better than an all day column-dectomy.
Ymmv.
P.S. - it's kinda lost in there... But the button is a SSB5 from O'Reily's.
You are correct, I had read were they gum up from gunk. So I did tear down my steering wheel and key didn’t return just stayed where I turned that’s when I posted on the Bronco forum and learned about the switch. However I just acquired a 96 150 and the key is difficult to turn in my opinion plus the piece that has the tabs to help you turn the key is missing s Think I would like to replace that and see if it’s difficult to twist for a reason.
Your ignition switch has likely just loosened up and slid down the steering column slightly. Loosen the bolts and pull the key all the way back into the accesory position and push the ignition switch as far up the column and tighten up those two bolts. Adjust accordingly. @sandymane
