Transfer case noise

Hey fellas need some advice-I’m working on my friends 02 ranger, she is complaining about a clunking when its 4 wheel. I’ve checked cv’s, front drive all looks good, drained the transfer case and was able to see a lot of slop in the chain. I’m thinking it needs to be replaced. However I don’t think she will want to put the money into it.

My question is- Will it hurt the transfercase if I essentially turn it into a 2wd by removing the front drive shaft?
The front drive shaft turns all the time regardless weather it’s in 2 wheel or 4. My thinking is that if I remove it then it will not turn the internals of the Transfer case and sling oil up to the top bearing for the rear drive shaft. Am I correct on thinking this or should I just take it out and let her eat!

I don't claim to be a transfer case expert, but. It sounds like the shift mechanism between 2wd and 4wd is not disconnecting from 4wd. If the front drive shaft is turning, it is in 4wd. Removing the front drive shaft will eliminate the clunking caused when turning on dry pavement when in 4wd because the front axle will no longer be driving the front wheels. Maybe somebody will come along and give advice on trouble shooting the transfer case shift mechanism.

Yeah I’m no expert either ha, but what I mint by the front drive shaft turning all the time was that there are no hubs in the front, so it’s a live axle all the time.
I had it jacked up all 4 wheels off the ground, put in and out of 4wd and that works fine. But if all 4 tires are rolling in the air every few seconds this terrible clunk happens, like the chain in the transfercase is binding cause of the slack in it.
I was looking at the FIll/Full level plug hole on the transfercase and it’s below the rear output, but the front output is below the fluid level near the drain, the chain connecting the two inside. So if the front output never turns because I have removed it from the live front axle, what will happen. I’m going to replace the transfercase. I’m just curious now. I need to know haha

Taking the front diriveshaft out won't hurt anything, the transfer case will still be spinning to put power to the rear wheels, and the front axle will still turn since its a live axle with no lockout hubs.
