I need 4wd schooling please.

I have a 1990 F150 4x4 with the 5.0 standard trans that i've been tinkering around with. Its been sitting so I just now put some wheels/tires on it and am going to do an oil change, spark plugs, wires, all that sort of stuff.

The question I have is I've never worked on any sort of 4wd truck. So I need to know all the basics, I under stand theres a transfer case coming off the trans that powers the front two tires and thats about it. I attempted to put the hubs into the "lock" position and drive the truck but they do not seem to be catching. I say they're not catching but I couldnt tell you if they were not catching or the drive shaft going to the front end was not spinning. How do I check? What all should I check and how do I go about doing it?
Thanks
-Nick

Engine off, transfer case in 2wd, front hubs unlocked, get under the truck and you should be able to rotate the front drive shaft. As you rotate it you should see one or both front axle shafts turning.
Engine off, transfer case in 4wd, front hubs unlocked, get under again and try to rotate the front drive shaft. It should not turn if the transfer case is working.
Engine off, transfer case in 2wd again but this time with front hubs locked, get under and try to rotate the front drive shaft. If the front hubs are working properly you should not be able to rotate the drive shaft. If you can rotate it then look at the axle shafts and see if either is turning. If one or both are turning then one or both locking hubs are faulty/sticking. If when turning the driveshaft neither of the axle shafts are turning then you may have a bad diff. or broken axle shaft.
