I don't run synthetic in my IDI. I use the Rotella T4 15W-40 available at Sam's Club. I change it every 5k miles.

I use the Rotella T4 15W-40 also, Castrol Edge would be a good synthetic .... the Rotella T4 is a short life oil but I doubt many here do SOAP on their engines.

.......and any additional additives may upset the existing chemistry and even decrease the effectiveness of the existing additives in the oil.
I've read that more than once by people who are really in the know. Good article.

I run Rotella T6 and change every 5k miles. Could probably go a lot more but oil and filters are cheap and easy compared to a rebuild. If you want to go to long intervals you should get your oil tested and figure out how long it takes to break down in your engine.

yeah that was my point about mentioning SOAP

EDIT: for those that don't know SOAP ====>>>> https://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...08043922500345

@ 8 bux per Gal I'll stick with Rotella T4

If you want to run synthetic and extend your oil drain interval, OK... but you need to do the other piece of the puzzle - add a very tight bypass filter(frantz, amsoil, or a centrifuge) to keep the oil clean.
I mean, honestly we probably could run 15W40 dino oil over 5K miles in terms of the oil breaking down... but by around 3K it's pretty filthy already.

I personally just use cheap Mobil Delvac 15W40 and change every 3K or so. And the inside of any engine I've run for a year or more has been spotless inside... despite having tons of miles on it.
I've also opened up motors that have *not* had their oils changed as frequently as they should, and the sludge isn't pretty.
