E40D bell housing leak

Hello there I have a 1990 F 250 4 x 4 with a 460 my question relates to the E4 OD automatic transmission symptoms I’m having are leaking from Bell housing Area I have removed transmission remove torque converter transmission pump and found a large snap ring just dangling off of the overdrive a ply piston my style truck has the aluminum on aluminum intermediate/overdrive could this be the culprit to my leak issue just curious how oil is getting past the trans pump if oil is not feeding the overdrive apply piston what kind of symptoms would one see. Most people say it’s the torque converter bushing or sealed but both were in great condition in fact this transmission almost looks brand new and the only thing besides the snap ring that I have found a small small graphite shavings on the magnet the fluid is beet red shift and drive perfectly before I remove transmission it would just leave any help please I have posted several times with not a single reply

Cool Brian thank you for that information though I have researched quite a bit and have seen all of the updated items available for transmission I just want to be 100% sure that that snap ring and losing 4th/overdrive is obviously going to cause the flu to overheat and I guess the path of least resistance is out of that front seal I do know there’s pressurize transmission fluid that flows through the overdrive intermediate piston cavity but without that Belleville spring and snap ring that fluid just gets lost in space so to speak because that aluminum aluminum connection is not being made and is causing internal leaks around the intermediate apply piston/overdrive piston seal The thing is is that area is behind the transmission pump so I’m trying to figure out how exactly fluid is working it’s way out to leak between the bell housing and want to confirm that the overdrive apply piston snap ring is causing my heat up issue Everything else inside checks out to be quite honest I’m surprise that snap ring didn’t chew up the planetary gear I want to say has a bell shaped but the teeth were on damaged by the snap ring luckily anymore, it would be great thank you so much all who have replied

Correction

I meant to say overdrive ring gear with no wear from snap ring Was just kind of hula hoop being around and snap ring did not cause damage
