I need some direction.
I drained my 3 speed standard transmission, with od, and only emptied about 1/2 quart of fluid. I filled the fill holes in the OD transmission until the fluid was to the bottom of the hole.
Now I have gear oil leaking every time I drive the truck. It leaks right out the rear of the OD where the drive shaft engages.
When I park the truck it will drip about 5-6 oz and then stop until I drive it again.
Did I put too much oil gear in? Did I not drain it properly? It seems to be driving fine.
The OD isn't working and it has all ways grinded when switching into first gear.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
That Warner T-85N 3 speed OD is designed to force lubricant up into the rear housing as it drives, to lubricate the rear gear sets. So, the leaking oil nmeans you have a rear main seal leak. Shouldn't be hard to replace.
It "grinds" in first because first gear isn't synchronized. It is supposed to do that, in the sense that synchros weren't put in place to prevent it. You should always come to a complete stop before putting it in first gear. Same with reverse.
Get that OD fixed, and you can get up to 18 or 19 MPG on the freeway - I do!
Thanks again Banjopicker. I really appreciate your help. I plan to re-wire the OD this weekend. I believe there are shorts in the wiring. I'll let you know how it goes.
