1990 5 spd

I have a 1990 2wd with a 351W and a E4OD. I want to change to a 5 spd and I found a donor 1991 with a 300 and a 5spd. How much different is the 5 spd used with the 300 to what is used on the 351?

If the '91 is an F150, the trans is likely the M5OD. It will bolt up to the 351W, but Ford never offered it this way because the M5OD is "light duty". You should be looking for a ZF5 trans IMO.

The M5 will work just fine behind the 351 and it's ratios are more appropriate to regular street driving, the ZF5 is the right choice for HD work but it's clunky in comparison and the granny low 1st makes it essentially a 4 speed on the street. Depending how the truck will be used an M5 could give you years of service.

I tow my race car with this truck. 2300 lb car and open trailer. I don't beat on it but it does haul some weight

Unless you gotta have the granny gear (which is handy), I say do the conversion with what you have. Then you can search for a ZF5 for a good price for the future if need be.

You will be fine gearing wise. First might be a little short, but that's ok, and will make starting on a hill a no smoking event.

I swapped my old 300 six for a 351 18 months ago and have had no issues. I don’t really tow anything with the truck but my boss who was the previous owner towed a 12 foot utility trailer when he had his landscaping business.

I had an 89 light duty 250 with the 302 and m5od. Bought it from my cousin whom used it to carry his cab over slide in camper and pull a trailer with a 4 wheeler and motorcycle on it. Now it's not a 351 but still pretty loaded for many thousands of miles.
Trick is to make sure the trans is full, doesnt leak, and dont get rammyjammy with it and it will be ok.
