whatever is done is not going to be cheap unless you can do it yourself and resolve all issues yourself.
try one of the transmission exchange-rebuilders that advertise on most Craigslist sites. In Florida they advertise constantly.
if you can get the last year Aerostar transmission, it has 4 speeds ( 3 + Overdrive), I forget the model name of the transmission.
Mine has proven reliable since 2013 when I bought the 1997 Aerostar RWD Extended body. ( 1997 was the last year for Aerostar).
