I just remembered another question for my 95 Explorer, the temp. guage dosen't move but 2 needle lengths at any time hot or cold. Any suggestions on fixing?
Might be the thermostat stuck open or a bad sender or a bad connection to the sender or instrument panel. Could be the gauge, but probably not. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that if you take the wire off the sender and ground it, the needle should go to full hot. If it does, it's a bad sender. If not, it's one of those other things.
I agree, grounding the sending unit wire should peg the gauge. If it does, then assume the gauge is OK. This doesn't necessarily prove if the sending unit is good or bad. If the gauge normally moves somewhat, your thermostat might stuck open and should be replaced. I'd start with replacing the thermostat since that is considered to be somewhat 'normal' maintenance.
I have been thinking about this for a few minuets, and if the themostat is stuck open then the gauge should read and stay between 1/4 to 1/3. But it doesn't even move into the normal zone. I think I will replace the themostat anyway, you have to start somewhere.
Have you verified that the gauge is ok by grounding the wire?? Keep in mind that the fan also plays a role in cooling the engine which may help explain why it doesn't get into the normal range.
This weekend I replaced the thermostat and found that the old one was stuck open. After replacing I started the truck and within two minuets it started warming up! GREAT! Thanks everyone for all the help.
I recently bought a 1997 Ford Explorer with V6 and noticed on the way to work this morning that the temperature gauge was not working.
The original poster indicated he put in a new thermostat and it warmed up, but never indicated if the gauge started working correctly. My Explorer warms up fine and puts out toasty heat.
Not sure if it's the sensor or the thermostat.
Gut feeling says sensor, and I understand there's a service bulletin out by Ford on this (#99-23-4).
Bullit, in your case it sounds like the only problem is an incorrect temp gauge reading. As mentioned earlier, try grounding the sending unit wire, if the gauge pegs at full hot, replace the sending unit.
