Hello All,
I am looking for some tips and ideas as to the re-installation and alignment of my 54 hood. After my engine swap I got the hood installed but to get it aligned and operating correctly is a bit of a trick. The hinge springs are in good shape so it holds itself up ok. The first problem is when I close it, I have to then push the front to the left (passenger side) a bit to get the reveals pretty close to the same even though the mounting bolts are tight. Once I get it centered between the fenders it seems to stay in place. The second problem is the rear of the hood raises up a bit above the cab metal (under the windshield) when the hood comes down. Then I have to push down on each read corner to get it flush. Prior to removing the hood for the engine swap, it closed pretty much centered between the fenders and did not raise up in the rear. The big question is: What are the tricks of the hood installation trade?
That seems like the hinges are to tight. To much friction not allowing them the full range of motion. Someone with more knowledge will be around to give you better advice soon I'm sure though.
Thanks Marten, When I had the hood off I also removed the hinges, cleaned the old goop off of them and repainted them. Maybe the new paint is keeping them from all the free movement they need. I am thinking now that I should give them some lubrication. Any thoughts as to what lubricant to use that doesn't attract too much dirt?
Here is a thread on front sheet metal alignment https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...procedure.html
Excellent instructions.
There is also a hidden pivot point on the hinges that needs to move freely.
Here are a couple of pictures of how the hinge should move.
Thanks for the good tips and ideas on the hood adjustments. All the pivot points seem to be moving but I gave them all a drink of some WD40 Silicon spray anyway as suggested. This can sit and soak in for a few more days and when I get the truck back from getting a new exhaust system I will do some more adjustments. The link to AXracer's instructions for adjusting the sheet metal and hood are very good easy to follow. I might have to remove the hood and readjust the entire front clip metal and then reinstall the hood and adjust. The hood is a major pain to get bolted back on but it may have to be done. The hood latch is now pulled as far forward as it can go and it catches and holds the hood nice and tight. It is pretty much the rear of the hood that wants to raise up above the cowl a bit. With the silicon spray applied and soaking the pivots, I am hopeful it will help. Thanks again for all your help.
