I believe Ford used those interchangeably. The 1964 Salesmans Data Book calls out the battery amperage and voltage but it does not say the brand. Likewise, tires list various sizes but no brand name is listed for the tires.
They do list brand names of Transmissions, Alternators, Generators, etc. but not the battery or tires. They might have done this on purpose so customers couldn't complain if they didn't get a particular brand of this or that in cases where supply varied some.
OK thanks. I think I am going to splurge and buy a period correct battery for my truck. My son found an almost pristine 1964 Montana Custer county dealer plate so now it has motivated me to get a battery. Who knows maybe I will dump the headers and the intake and carb and paint the motor correct and truly make it as original.
I'll measure my current battery as it fits the hold down perfect and order by dimension. I believe there were 2 different charging and battery options in 64 which would explain the 2 different hold downs for 64.
There used to be a company called New Castle Battery in Penn., I think they died. They made nice tar-top Power Punch and other reproduction batteries, actual damp-dry charged lead-acid batteries where you buy the electrolyte locally and fill it up. That avoids Hazmat shipping fees. Nobody today offers "real" batteries as far as I know, they just stuff sealed AGM batts inside reproduction cases. What's the fun in that?
It doesn't say right here in this info. It does say how many volts, number of plates, amps, and the applications - but not the group.
The 1975 edition MPC shows a 70 amp in the Group 27 and a 55 amp in both Group 24 and 29 that are all valid replacements for 1964 through at least 1972. One other factor is what size of battery will the tray hold? Would 13" across the top length be too big? If so that could rule out group 29, otherwise not sure.
This info goes into performance curves of the generator and alternators so it's interesting it doesn't have the battery group sizes listed, too.
Here's a page on the generators and alternators and in the middle of the page is the current draw of some of the equipment, which is sort of handy.
The Power Punch I had was Group 29N and fits in the tray in my 64. Seems to me the tray would accept a quite a bit wider battery than 29, I have a Group 65 DieHard Gold in it last few years. The only reason to use a 29 would to be authentic with a Power Punch or Sta-Ful or whatever, because the upper hold down bracket won't fit otherwise.
I can't find reference to Group 29 in Operator's or Shop Manual, but it was Seared into my Hippocampus somewhere's along the way.
