Hello, My 2150 carb that I installed appears to have a vapor leak. I installed it on a 351 windsor. I have to remount it. Do I need to put gasket sealent on the gaskets? Any other important instructions or directions would be apprectated. Thank you.
Nope. The gasket is the sealant. Make sure the mating surfaces are perfectly clean and flat, don't overtighten carburetor flange nuts. Just very snug (precise technical term) if no torque wrench available. Criss-cross pattern, slowly is important, so the casting doesn't warp or break. The nuts might tend to loosen with a few heat cycles, keep snugging them up/down till it stabilizes.
First off, do you have a vacuum leak or a vapor leak? They're completely different.
A vacuum leak causes the engine to run like crap, and may hiss or whistle.
A vapor leak means it smells like gas.
Either way, no you never use sealant on carb gaskets. The gasket is the sealant as stated above. If you have a "vapor" leak like described above, a carb gasket has nothing to do with it.
I've never used a gasket sealant on a carburetor mounting gasket. The closest is when I used a thin "smear" of anti-seize to discourage the gasket from sticking to the hot metal surfaces. If your surfaces are clean, smooth and planar the gasket should seal well. Tighten as indicated above. It's probably not necessary, but if you wanted to measure the torque on the attaching bolts, the shop manual says it should be 12-15 ft.-pounds with oiled threads.
If the "problem" is sad running then it is more likely a vacuum leak. Check all possible locations for a vacuum leak.
