I've seen a bunch of threads on this, but I don't think I've ever seen a definitive answer. I suspect that it often had something to do with the phase of the moon, or maybe the aurora borealis.
Seriously though, Like you I've heard that SuperCabs got the Dana 50. And I know that my '97 CrewCab has it. I think when I ordered my '85 F-250 new there was an option for a snow plow package (I didn't get it), and I wouldn't be surprised if that came with the D50. But that's just guessing.
I'd be surprised if any F-250s (as opposed to F-250HD) had the D50. But I know that at least my '85 F-250HD had a D44, so it's not like that was the determining factor.
80-91 is was a crap shoot as what got the D44 n D50 in regular cab flavor. All supercabs were D50, as was all 92+ F250s regardless of cab size. D44 hubs are 3 1/4" and D50 are 4", same as a D60. In mid 94 Ford changed the rotor size on the D50 and around the same time switched from the slide caliper trainer to the bolt style on all front axles.
So it seems that it's as bad as GM putting aluminum AND cast iron front diffs in Blazers and s10s with no rhyme or reason. Oh and they both had the same part number....
