Question for the tire experts out there. I bought my 17 F250 6.7 used came with cooper discoverer st maxx tires in size 285/70 r17. It is time to replace them and I noticed door jam sticker says stock tire size is 245/75 r17. I know the current tires I have are wider and have a taller sidewall (plus they are heavier obviously).
This is my farm truck and I spend a lot of time driving and moving my chicken coops through pasture. Also tow mild loads a few times a month and have ~2000lb of water in the bed often.
I think I am set on getting another set of the st maxx or goodyear wrangler duratrac. My question is should I stick with the 285/70r17 or go back to stock size 245/75r17 for what Im using the truck for? I think I'd get better mpg with the smaller tires (and they are a little cheaper) but would I lose a noticeable amount of traction offroad? Thanks for your help
I would want the extra traction in a pasture with the extra weight. That stt maxx is pretty aggressive.. and probably fitting for the type of condition you have. I have a 6.7 and wouldn’t consider driving in a pasture on the stock tires
I would stick with the 285/70 r17. I think the stock tires are too small myself. We're running a lot of the stt max on our trucks at work and the guys seem to be pretty happy with them. If you're happy with the way they've been performing, I'd stick with them. Personally, I'm a BFG KO2 fan. That's all I run.
It has been a little while since I have read the forum so you may have already gotten your tires.I spent some time researching mine and before putting these on my truck. I have been happy with their performance and wear. I was trying to get a modern tire that resembled the original size (tall and narrow) the best. I could not find any information on rolling resistance though. I can take a closer picture of the tire if it helps.
