I have decided to fab a generator mount to go on my front bumper. I am basically copying the Torklift Lock and Load as it seems to me like $375 is excessive for something that is so simple. Here is my question. If you are carrying your genny on your front bumper, how often do you take it off to use it while camped. My wife and I have been trying to decide whether to run it in place or take it off when we take the truck camper off the truck so I stays with the camper. it seems like there are pluses and minuses both ways. Thoughts?
Okay, so now I have my version of Torklift's lock-and-load completed for. If you carry fuel with you for your genny, how and where to you carry it. I do not intend to carry mine ahead of the front bumper. Ideas?
When I carried a generator with my Lance 165s I carried it on the back hitch rack, for me it was really hard to decide, it seemed that no matter where I carried it, it was vulnerable. The camper I got now the generator runs on propane, I don't know if its really much safer, if at all. I thought maybe on the camper roof rack it would be out of the "impact" zone, but climbing up there with 5 gallons of gas, seemed like a deal breaker.
Note; when I was using the portable generator on my 165s, and it was on the back rack, I did build a cage of sorts, to help protect the red plastic gas can and I was actually using a 1 gallon gas can at the time. I used 1inch aluminum round stock and covered that with black foam pipe insulation.
Thanks for the reply. I finished my front mount for our Yamaha 2000 today along with a cover made out of sheet aluminum. I am thinking about using these fastened on the ladder to carry fuel.
Never got around to it, still sitting in the shop. Last year we got a bigger camper with a propane generator, so I gave the old lance 165s to my Grandson
Here’s my mount, I’ve been running this setup for a very long time. I’ve got a second rack just for one genny, but uses the same gas tank. Mostly use it during the winters where I don’t need two gennys running.
