Which fluids for 4r100 2002

Hi,
I’m changing the trans fluid for the 1st time in this vehicle. Can we use max life ATF (the red synthetic bottle) which is LV, V rated or the blue bottle which is just conventional dex/Merc. I just need cheap and effective. Also, would you recommend a filter change? I’ve (here) that it’s good for 300k+

Mercon V from Ford/Motorcraft. Change the filter too. Gasket is re-useable

Mobil1 syntetic atf is also good. I used it in a previously owned truck w the 4r100.
The filter can be changed but it's not really required according to MArk K.
When you do pull the filter, make sure the O-ring comes out.
There is a special way to get all the fluid out of the system, it's in the tech section. IF you just do a drain and pan drop there will still be a lot of old fluid left.

Walmart sells Supertech MerconV, I had to go to more than one store to buy enough though.

I've used that, too, with good results.

The filter does not need to be changed until the transmission is rebuilt. The only way it can get enough junk in it to make a difference is if the transmission fails.

Here is how to change all of the fluid in the trans: Changing ATF.

I opted to use super tech Mercon v. The shifts are different. I think Mercon was in there before. Seems to have improved WOT. I didn’t drop the pan, the old fluid was really clean surprisingly.
