Trying to catch up my maintenance. My owners manual doesn't say how often to change fluin in the 4R44E transmission. All others are 30,000 miles. Since mine uses Mercon V I didn't know if it was a longer interval. Also, it says to use Mercon in the transfer case. Would I be in trouble if I used the Mercon V instead? My thought was that if a seal failed between the transmission and transfer I would have a problem. Also, what method do you use for changing fluid? Do you just drop the pan and replace what drains out and change the filter, or do you attempt to flush everything out? One more while I'm at it. What filter do you use? There isn't a dealer localy and the parts store only offers a Pioneer for $50 and an ATP for $20. Thanks for the help.
I sent an e-mail off to Royal Purple with my trucks specs and they sent back a list of their products to use in each part of the drivetrain. Simple.
AL.
Rock Auto has Motorcraft filter kits on their web site. I did the tranny fluid and filter (FT-103) today, got it at the local Ford Dealer for my 5R55E. I used Mercon V, but I didn't do the transfer case or diff fluid yet. Maybe another day.
Use Mercon V fluid, and only Mercon V fluid, in your tranmission. DO NOT use regular Mercon or a "hybrid" fluid that claims it covers it all (Dexron/Mercon/Mercon V). I highly recommend Castrol Mercon V, recommended and approved by Ford.
Use regular Mercon in your tranny case. For this application, even one of those "hybrid" fluids will be fine.
This is one of the many goodies that can be found in the Ranger Tech Info Thread:
Will I have trouble if I use the Mercon V in the transfer case? I have a full case of the Castrol fluid and a Wix filter ready to go. Which hose do I want to take loose to flush the fluid? I know that one will blow fluid out and that is the one I want to take loose. Thanks.
I don't think you'll have any trouble using Mercon V in the transfer case. Just make sure you drain ALL of the old fluid out, so that you don't end up mixing Mercon and Mercon V.
Well, all went well. I went with the Mercon in the transfer. I thought I had better leave well enough alone. I have a question though. What does Mercon V look like when it is well used? What I drained out was brown to clear. The truck had almost 60,000 on it and the fluid had been changed. It had WIX filter in it, so I am guessing it was changed at 30,000. I am wondering if the wrong fluid was used before. It always seemed to shift odd to me and the converter seemed to slip alot. Now it seems to shift more like it should and the slip in the converter doesn't seem as bad. Am I crazy, or am I on the right track? Thanks.
