I recently lost first and second gear. Troubleshooting indicates it's the shifter Fork. I can also feel wear in a third gear fork. My question is can I remove the top plate of the transmission in a 1997 without dropping the transmission.
Hopefully I can do it this way. Removing the transfer case and the transmission to do this would extend the job longer than I'm able to do right now

Reason: Typos
Not sure about the 1997s but all the previous trucks and Broncos had a removable tunnel cover under the carpet
The tunnel cover is pretty big, roughly 20 x 24 inches
We used to remove the seat first to make it easier
Just look up from underneath the vehicle and see if you see bolts that surround the tunnel cover or not
It should have a tunnel cover to enable you to do repairs like those shift forks
The pins shear in those rails once in a while
Never replaced an actual shift fork on one, just the roll pins
Silicone those tower rail plugs back in there so they do not leak as quick
