Hey all, my 2015 F250 XLT, CC 4X4 PSD just rolled up to 60K miles. Trying to be proactive, I am changing the trans fluid/filter, and the transfer case fluid.
When are you all changing the diff fluid?
Manual says lubed for life,,,,don't really buy that. But,,,,am I a little early at 60K? Wait till 100K? This is the Ford 10.5" 3.31 ratio, my heaviest trailer is about 11K lbs. Not really worrying about the front axle just yet, I think this truck has been 4 wheel drive maybe 3 times. Unless I am missing it somewhere, what is the change interval on the front diff?
If one thinks about it, there are millions, if not billions of vehicles on the highways around the world that have never had the differential fluid changed in 10, 20, 50 years and they have never had a problem. The current fluid is full synthetic designed for long life extreme service. The owner's manual states about not needing to be changed unless water has been introduced to the rear axle assembly.
I do not plan on changing the fluid in my 2015 per owner's manual.
my 2012 F 250, 6.2L Gas 2 wheel drive.. was a fleet/lease with all service records..
9 / 2011 put on the road... I purchased it 8 / 2015 with 136.000 miles.
4,100 run hours.. 600 idle hours... so a Freeway truck
I changed the gear lube.... as it was never done.. it was Still Clean... and no trash at the bottom of the diff housing.
I would do it at 100,000 miles. just that would be me.
as for the front axle.. you better start using is a bit more ( even for a 1/4 mile ).... to keep all the parts lubed... fluid drain-off can cause RUST on machined parts inside the housing.... my opinion.
Good advice, I lock the hubs (I have manual ones) and drive it to work once every week or 2. The front axle is a Dana? Is there a change interval for that one or is 100K ok there too?

I don't think the front diffs have synthetic in them from the factory. My Ford's owners manual specifies "premium rear axle lubricant" for the front and it specifies synthetic for the rear.

I just changed transmission with filter, and transfer case (49K) and am about to change front and rear diffs, probably this weekend.
It's an easy job. It might be overkill but I play it safe. If you tow regularly I would definitely do the rear diff every 30k. The front maybe not as much.
I don't buy the claim to never change the fluid. I'm thinking to replace the fluid in my '99 with 65k miles here pretty soon. I put Amsoil Sever Gear in my Trailblazer and haven't had any issues. When I get my butt around to actually doing the job, I'll put some of the Amsoil Sever Gear stuff in my F-250 as well. All of the opinions, and independent research, I've done seem to indicate that Amsoil is top of the line stuff. I'm willing to spend a few bucks and a few hours to prolong the life of my vehicles.

It's lifetime fluid for the part not the vehicle. So if your diff blows up at 150K, well that was the life.
I stay away from snake oils. The diffs get synthetic and the trans and transfer case get oem fluids.
