I have had 2 accelerator pump diaphragms fail in a relatively short period of time. They rupture (leak) so when I push in the throttle, then let off, gas shoots out the little hole in the accelerator pump cover onto the intake manifold.
Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening so frequently? Is there something that I should do or shouldn't be doing to prevent this? Sometimes I pump the pedal 3 times before cold start, could this be causing it to rupture?
Or could it be due to crappy aftermarket diaphragm material, combined with the junk gas they make these days?
Where or who are you buying the kits/parts from? There are some differences that may not be visual. Try to buy directly from a carburetor parts vendor whenever possible. The standard kits at the drugstore are probably junk.
I'm not certain on this, but it seems like Marvel's in the fuel on a regular basis helps keep fuel hose rot and other carb damage at bay. It doesn't hurt anything at least.
Make sure you're getting the diaphragm compatible with alcohol based fuel (ethanol). Pretty sure Ford would be selling the newest version, probably Napa's better quality option also .And as Beartracks mentioned make sure of the .015 at WOT. Without this you could be overextending the actuating arm and diaphragm.
Thanks everyone for the replies. I ordered a new "AP295 Motorcraft 2150 Pump Diaphram Assembly" from Mike's Carburetor Parts. I removed the old diaphragm and it was hard and deteriorating. It obviously did not hold up well to the fuel.. I want to say it's about a year and a half old. I think I got it from NAPA but I can't remember. Hopefully this diaphragm holds up better than the last.
