My cruise control hasn't worked for a long time. It hasn't been a big deal because I haven't had to drive longer then a few hours the time it has been out. However I have a 5 hour trip coming up and would really like to get it working again.
So what I know so far. I tried to get the cruise control to enter diagnostic mode by pressing and holding the "Off" button and turning the key to run. It will not enter the diagnostic mode. The trouble tree says this is an issue with the switches or the clock spring. I tried a known good switch and had the same result so I assume my next step is the clock spring. I have a bit of a hard time believing it is the clock spring since everything else works perfectly.
I also know my parking brake light does not seem to set a light either. It could be set or not set and I have no dash light. Would the parking break have any impact on cruise control?
There is a pressure switch that threads into the master cylinder that shuts of the cruise control when brakes are applied. Numerous Fords had leaks in this switch that corroded the wiring and inactive the cruise control. Think it even was a recall because fires started. When we got our truck the cruise didn’t work, replaced the wiring harness and it worked again.
Could also be the switch itself
Do you have something that will read the Ford specific DTCs? The run of the mill parts store reader in most cases won't cut it.
Using one of the ELM modules with Forscan would be the least costly option. f you have access to AutoEnginuity's® ScanTool,
Ford VCM with IDS or one of the other high end scan tools.
Also both issues might be related and I think it would be helpful to keep it all under one thread. John can combine the two if you ask him.
I have access to the service manuals and wiring diagrams for the 2006 truck.
I have a clone IDS I got from you Sean. When I doing injector resting last fall I don't remember there being any thing I saw related to the cruise system or brakes. I'll have to scan it again with IDS and see.
That would be a good first step.
You may want to get your hands on some airbag simulators for testing.
Well so much for getting the files from the now dead PC.
I guess kicking the stupid pile of **** over may not of helped things.
NOT HAPPY. Time for a new motherboard and parts. Four letter word.
Well I might be able to drag the data out of the computer somehow. I am in the process of painting my office space and this was in the
middle of murdering the PC. It would not load into my profile no mater what I did. I think I have a hardware failure going on. So if I can
get the Win 7 machine to work I will give it a try.
It will be later tonight before I can do anything.
Well rats i just did some calculations and I am short one gallon of paint in the color I need.
The bulb was burnt out. I replaced it and it is functional again.I discovered it when I was checking the brake lights and turn signals when I got the B1483 code.
Well I have been reading thread after thread on this. I am going to pull the instrument cluster today and check the bulbs. Maybe the indicator is burned out so I can't see it go into self test. It certainly doesn't act like a bad clock spring but if the bulb is good that will be my next step to replace it.
Also my parking brake light has never worked so maybe there is something to that as well.
Took the bulbs out and they look good. I did a continuity check on the them anyway while out and they're good. After getting everything back together though one of the bulbs is not working so I get to take it all apart again. It seems to me though that those light are not controlled by a bulb but rather integrated right on the cluster circuit board?
I guess I am down to the clock spring unless someone else has another idea on what is wrong?
Do you have Forscan or even lite version? With it you can run an KOEO system test that tests the buttons on the steering wheel and parking brake (along with other stuff) and if it is not working it will fail. Also using Forscan you can check inputs in other modules such as BOO switch, speed sensors, ect. These are used for cruise to work. If an input is missing then cruise will not work.
Process of elimination and you may find the issue or atleast have fun trying.
