Need help please buying this truck today please

Hey guys I'm new to the diesel world and I'm about to pick up a 01 f250 7.3l powerstroke 6 speed trans, well I test drove it yesterday and when I went to take off in 1st letting the clutch out and rolling slowly it started making this whining/grinding noise pretty loud, and it did that only in low rpms in 1st and 2nd gear, when i pressed the clutch in tho it went away, the guy says urs normal but tried to come up with 100 excuses on why it was making that noise, I need help please thank you

I can help. Mine is for sale LOL....but seriously, without hearing it, it could be gear rollover. Grinding shouldn't be happening though.

Like the fellas above me have said, the sound was probably gear rollover which is somewhat common and OK. Most of us have found a fluid for the ZF6 we are happy with that reduces gear rollover by 99%.

I used Amsoil for a few years, but recently switched to Redline High Temp ATF and prefer it over Amsoil.

If this sale falls through, hit up BBSlider for a great truck.

Grinding = bad
Gear rollover, normal.

Kind of a low toned rumble, tractor pto noise below 900rpm, louder the slower you go

Grinding, more high pitched, sharp

Hard to describe, probably a YouTube out there with it

Also, make sure there is no bucking or jumping sensation when letting out of the clutch and then applying throttle. That is called clutch chatter which is bad!

I was uninformed about how to drive a ZF6 truck when I bought mine 5 years ago and learned the hard way what clutch chatter was and how to drive the truck properly.

I have some great videos about my ZF6 truck and some of the things that I have had to fix on my YouTube channel. Check out the 7.3/ZF6 playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...JZEE-Kv1XAzSir

Well, as I said, I had to learn to drive it...

This is not a Honda Civic or another light clutch vehicle. When you are driving the ZF6 equipped truck, the throttle pedal and the clutch pedal should NEVER be used at the same time. You DO NOT ease off the clutch while you ease into the throttle. The clutch comes completely OUT/UP before throttle is applied. In some cases you can use the brake pedal and the clutch pedal to keep from rolling backward, but NEVER the throttle and the clutch.

Check out my videos and you will see where my flywheel had hot spots causing clutch chatter and my clutch was completely burnt. The truck was experiencing clutch chatter from the day I bought it, and because of my ignorance at the time I didn't know what to look for. I have since learned a lot from the fellas here on the FTE and resolved my clutch chatter issues.

Is the truck a 4x4? If so, check out my video on how to perform the video below, also on my YouTube channel.

The reverse gear in the ZF6 is stupid fast and under powered. If you have manual hubs already (if 4x4), then disregard the video above, but feel free to educate yourself with some of the other videos on there.

As for filling the ZF6, if you cannot get the fill plug out, you can fill it from the gear shifter. Some guys do this anyway to get an extra 1/2 quart of fluid in to round up to 6 full quarts. I had to do this because my fill plug was seized in the case, but that has since been resolved.

Ask any/all questions you have... Better to learn from our experiences and mistakes than to make them yourself.

Also, PICTURES!!!!!!

Wait a minute - I missed something here - I thought we changed your mind and you were going to hold onto this gem.

To the OP, we'd love to see your new rig.

I changed fluid in the manual trans to Redline High Temp ATF. It reduced the rollover sound but did not eliminate it all together. Not sure you can completely eliminate it.
Shifting also improved IMHO. Specifically the lower gears. L-1 or 1-2 shifts.

I was....but apparently it was still for sale and I didn't realize it was. I started getting texts and calls out the wazoo last week. I guess idiots got their tax returns. Anyways, he'll prolly stay. People are still broke and don't wanna pay asking, sooooo....you didn't miss anything. I'm just being bipolar about it all.
