Had a friend in high school with a 68 F100 with a 390/4 speed found a SOHC 427 in a barn and tried to get the owner to sell it to him. That' would have been a wild ride too

Ya know I've never even seen one of the 427's--those were "side oilers" correct?

Was that '68 F100 stock with the 390 and 4 speed?

The "side oiler" referred to the block's oiling system. SOHC 427 was a Single Over Head Cam engine, Ford's answer to the Hemi in the mid 60's. His pickup wasn't stock, probably came with a 352 or 360 and a 3 speed. He swapped in the 390 and Toploader 4 speed. I bought my first FE 3x2 setup from him and the 406 heads to match.
