77 ford 460 engine fuel pump question
Bare with me here - I usually work on newer vehicles so I may not make any sense.
I am looking at purchasing a 77 ford with a 460 engine.
The owner tells me it is not getting fuel, but that when he puts fuel directly into the carb that it starts up. He goes on to tell me it just needs a fuel pump.
I have never worked with a mechanical fuel pump so I did some research. In this case the fuel pump is mounted in the top front of the engine. It looks like an easy fix. It seems like a sure bet.
My question is this. What else could be wrong that could cause no fuel?
I figure that the cam could be broken, but that doesn't really make sense. Or maybe that the fuel lines or tank could be leaky or broken somewhere before the pump?
Any ideas?
Thanks
If the rig starts when it has fuel the problem is most likely not cam or timing gear associated.
There are several different ways to prove out a truck's fuel system (lines, hoses, etc.) and they vary somewhat depending on whether there is one or more fuel tanks and whether , with multiple tanks, they are factory or aftermarket.
The easiest way (I think) to check a fuel pump is to disconnect the inlet line from the pump, install a section of hose to the inlet and drop the other end of this hose in a can of gas that is setting on the floor. Disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor and point it into a "catch can". Now crank the engine and see how much, if any, gas gets pumped out.
A fuel pressure check is always a good test too.
Good luck.

Yes the mechanical fuel pump is mounted to the dvrs side, fwd part of the engine. 2 bolts, 2 fuel lines and it comes right off.
If you have a a/c compressor bracket, it is under it and can be a PITA, but still doable. X2 on do some basic troubleshooting before dropping the fuel pump.
If it is the pump, make sure when you replace it you get the fuel pump ARM under the eccentric cam. We can walk you thru that part to, it is easy.
! If you do replace the fuel pump, you will be greatly assisted by changing your oil, since the job is much easier with the oil filter off.
