I have a 2000 F250 CCLB SRW. I've been having issues up on the front end lately. One of the things I've been trying to do is install new u-joints on the axle shaft. Unfortunately, the previous owners did not take care of the truck too well (Illinois roads are brutal). I need to get new shafts but Google is not being friendly right now. I've read that my truck could potentially have the 50 or 60 in it. Is there any way I can figure that out BEFORE I order new parts and if so, where do you suggest I look to find replacements? I'm trying to save as much money as possible, where possible.
Your truck should have a Dana 50 unless previous owner swapped out with newer truck,or compare with known stock truck 99 through 2001 f250 or f350 single rear wheel, I would check prices with Rock Auto
I would guess Dana 50 also but you can look on top of the diff. Dana 50 and 60 are discernible here. Refer to the photo. 60s are more gradually angled and 50s drop off distinctly.
Amazon had pretty good prices when I did my u-joints several years ago. These are the correct u-joints for our D50 front axles despite the description:
Dana Spicer SPL55-3X Dana 60 Heavy Duty Axle U-Joint By Dana Spicer
Here is what i used. I appear to have the same truck as you and live in Illinois as well. Our roads may suck but Iowa has us beat on several of their roads
The 99-03 SD SRW front axles (D50 and D60) use the same parts from the "knuckles-out". The inner axle shafts are different as are the differential innards and center section but the wheel bearings, outer stubs, ball joints, caliper brackets, and knuckles are the same.
The hub flange on the E99 wheel bearing assembly is 3mm thinner than the later ones thus making the rotors different but anything you need for fixing your u-joints will be the same.
....and yes, your 1999 SRW pickup will have a Dana 50. The only "real" differences between that and a D60 are the ring gear diameter and the side gear/inner axle spline count (smaller OD).
Remember to replace the stub shaft bearing while you're there and make sure the axle shaft isn't trashed if the bearing has failed.
Also, the sticker on the back side of the right hand axle tube will say "229" for a D50 and "248" for a D60.
I picked this up last year from West Coast Differentials. To me the 50 and 60 look identical. I supposed you could call them if you don't see a difference.
I'm in Northern Michigan. Your roads are like the yellow brick. My truck has a few years on yours. (Same setup) and I had my front driveshaft rebuilt last year for 80 bucks and parts (u-joints and carrier assy for the knuckle complete) Walked away with a sandblasted primed and painted black unit I was ashamed to put under the truck because it should have been on a wall in my garage.
Find a driveline shop or a very good backyard guy and have them do a full rebuild.
