Good morning FTE! First let me say how much I appreciate this community. The knowledge base here has helped me tremendously on both of my recent Ford trucks.
Now, on to my current issue. I have a 2005 EX 6.0 with 170,000 miles. Daily driver for my wife and me, no significant towing. (We fight over who gets it each week usually). Basically stock except the FICM & LN alternator. That will change next year, but for now I am experiencing significant turbo flutter and am certain the vanes and unison ring need attention. I would rather rebuild it myself but am in the middle of too many projects to make that an option before we head out for vacation. I called a local "diesel only" shop and he said he would only replace due to his experiences.
My questions are:
1 - Is that a reasonable answer at this time? Seems to me from my searches and the TECH folder that it is a fairly straightforward procedure. I think he just doesn't want to be bothered with the rebuild.
2 - Is there anything else i should be replacing at the same time? i would rather get anything necessary out of the way at the same time.
3 - Any shops to recommend in the North NJ area?
Sometimes a good cleaning is all that is needed. Hard to say what the right path for you would be. If you didn't mind the time spent, and if you don't mind redoing the job in 6 months (if it really is an issue w/ the turbo itself), then I would try cleaning and reassembling.
If there is much axial or radial play in the rotating element, or if there is any damage to the compressor blades or turbine wheel, then I would just replace it.
The way I look at is that it is easier to replace it with a $750 stock turbo. My time is to valuable to take time to disassemble/reassemble things when I can simply replace it.
Might want to check and make sure the egr isn't going bad. If and when it sounds like it flutters, does it blow black smoke? I would unplug the egr and see if it helps before buying a new turbo. Never know
