No, not had at all. Go to youtube and watch a few turbo rebuild videos. Go to ebay and check out prices for parts. New bearing kit, maybe a wicked wheel replacement? Remember, The compressor wheel is left hand threads. Buy parts before taking it apart.
Not hard. You need a new unison ring and a mounting kit...under $200 total. Watch a couple you tube video's. They can be cleaned successfully, often saving the cost of the ring.
I have been told my turbo is stuck and needs to be replaced. Also they can replace it with a stock Garrett or stage 1 Garrett for the same price.
Are the original turbo's worth trying to rebuild? The guy working on my truck says no sometimes they won't work after rebuild.
I would rebuild it - is it drastically hard?
Thanks
Ted
Is this truck your daily driver?
If yes, then I would say and agree to get the parts together before tearing apart.
If it is not your daily driver, then I would start tearing it apart and then order what is needed to be replaced.
It will take a half a day if you take your time, and this being your first tear apart on the turbo you will want to take your time to get to know the insides of it.
Some people state that it only takes 4 hours...... eh.
I know one of our resident tech's that can have a turbo out in 15 minuets. Personally I'd plan a whole day if it's your first time. Maybe even a whole weekend.
I just pulled my turbo for the first time last night. It took about 3 hours of slow paced work, playing/pausing a remove/reinstall video, and Ron's video for cleaning as I went. An hour or so cleaning it and messing around followed. Then about 3 hours putting it all back together slowly tonight. Rebuilding will obviously add time to this.
Lucky me found that someone has been in there before, and broke one of the tabs on the VGT solenoid elec connector, and didnt install the 2 front FICM hold down nuts... Or a CCV o-ring in the 1" tube from the valve cover to the intake tube...

That connector is delicate. I DIDN'T break yours but I did break mine.
I too cleaned my turbo after first cleaning the unison ring and only 20k later. I then replaced the ring instead and good so far with new miles.
I'd replace it as it cheap insurance and I'd bet the diameter opening is just a tad larger.
