I need some help. My dad just got a new boat with surge brakes and I’m the lucky one to put it in the water for him. It came with a 5 way plug that I’ve never seen. Obviously, these trucks only have the 7 way and 4 way. What is the best way to wire up a 5 way plug to these trucks. All my searching shows the 5th connection is to allow for the reversing of the trailer. Thanks in advance.
I seen those, but didn’t think it would work. The 5 way plug seems to use the backup lights to actuate a solenoid to stop the hydraulic breaks from activating. The 7 way plugs don’t seem to have the backup light wired to them. I may be wrong. If it will work, great. Just wanted to make sure before I bought one.
All of my trailers, from big to small, get a 7 way plug. Even my small utility trailer has a 7 way. I'd cut off the 5 way piece and splice on a 7 way plug. That way others can pull the boat if it every becomes necessary.

Yes, it will work. My past boat had the setup you describe and the 5 to 7 way worked. One of the 7 way is a backup light circuit as shown in the above posted diagram so you're covered.
