Hello,
I have bought a 1981 f250 and it doesn't have any hood letters, or holes for them. Was there ever the option to have them without the letters? Or could it be that it is just an aftermarket hood/ they were closed when the truck was repainted? I am thinking about adding the letters back, tips for drilling the holes or using stick on letters are appreciated.
82 or 83 up did not have the hood letters but had the blue oval in the grille.
So with that said the 80 & 81 (maybe 82?) did not have the blue oval in the grille.
I will try and get the measurements this weekend but do remind me Sunday if I have not.

All 1982/86 F100/350 & Bronco have the blue oval emblem in the grille.
I have not forgotten this I just have not had the time to make it out to the garage to get the measurements yet.
Hope to this weekend before I do any work on my truck.

I am going to try and get them tonight or for sure tomorrow as I want to do work on my truck then.
Only thing is how to measure them. The holes are not up / down or left / right, some are at a 45* IIRC.
I may have to find the letters in 1 of the parts bins and place them on the hood to get measurements.
What I did when I was looking to use a hood with out the letters was pull all the letters off and took craft paper and taped in even across the bottom edge then marked the 2 ridges, 1 on either side for the center part.
Once I had a way to place this paper on the other hood in the same place I then marked all the holes.
I could then use this paper pattern on the non-hole hood to mark& drill the letter holes.

Ok up at 6am to get measurements and work on my truck.
Now I did not go looking for the letters, would have wasted at least an hour so the measurements are to holes and I will tell you how I did it.
Also note the holes are not left / right or up / down so this also makes it hard to measure.
From where the letters would be to the first body line below them, NOT the lower edge.
To the center of the lower holes I got 1-1/4" up from that body line. So if you ran a line across 1-1/4" from that body line no holes will be any lower than that.
From left to right for the "F" & "O" measurement taken from the left body line to between the 2 holes for "F" I got 4"
From this same line to the next set of holes for the "O" I got 17-1/2"
From right to left for the "R" & "D" measurement taken from the right body line to between the 2 holes for "D" I got 4"
From this same line to the next set of holes for the "R" I got 17-1/2"
I did not take any measurements off the hoods center line but from the looks of it the measurements look to be switched.
So 4" to the holes for "O" & "R' and 17-1/2" to the "F" & "D".
Before drilling any holes do you have the right size barrel clips for the letter posts?
There are no holes on the back side of my hood to put nuts on them and the clips can be hard to come by.
If you use a grease pencil and lay out the measurements and then hold the letters in place you should be able to tell if they are right or not.
Sorry I cant be of more help as I don't know how else to get the measurements.

My 1980 hood was bad and I found one from a 1983 F150 at the JY. I made a template for locating these letters. I did not drill holes to mount them but, rather ground off the letter standoffs. I filled the backside of the letters with JB Weld metal epoxy and attached the letters with 3M Extreme Mounting Tape. I can extrapolate dimensions from my template if you're interested and provide a graphic based on my finished hood.

You used the same body lines I gave in my above post.

Well, Its been a while, but I finally got around to putting the Letters on. I ended up filling the studs off and filling the letters with epoxy. Then put them on with some of that 3M double sided emblem tape. I was on the fence on if I like it, but in the end I am pretty happy with how it turned out. I think it looks good on the truck
