Hood Letters

I think I asked this before but cant find the thread?

Why do some 79's have FORD on the hood in chrome letters and some hoods have nothing?

Cuz F O R D letters are in the upper section of the grill on 73 to 77.

Or ya asking specifically for 79s?

78/79s did away with that format due to the new grill style.

The FORD letters came on all '78-'79 hoods regardless of trim level, so if you see a hood without them, the holes have been filled, or the hood has been replaced with one from a '73-'77.
And WOW that's a gorgeous blue truck!

My 79 doesn't have the F O R D hood letters cause I think they are ugly & removed them. One of the first things I did when I got the truck in 1987.

I'm pretty sure that they were factory on all of the '77-79 grille styles, I can't think of a true factory original one that didn't have them. But many, many times they were eliminated during a repaint or "deer repair", because many people thought they were a little on the dorky-looking side. Plus, replacement hoods were available without the holes for a little cheaper (back in the day, I don't know anymore if you can get a repop hood WITH holes), and emblems were fairly pricey. So to buy the emblems, spend the time to measure out and drill the holes..... Good way to shave a couple hundred off a repair........

About 50% of the 78/79's don't have the letters.
I cant believe that many people removed them, plus Ive looked on the inside for holes a few times and saw none?

I have a friend with a 79 he bought new it doesn't have them?

The hood is the same 1973/79 F100/350 & 1978/79 Bronco. When a replacement hood was bought from FoMoCo, there were no holes punched out for letters.

Body shops, the general public bought used hoods in junkyards. Since there were more 1973/77's than there were 1978/79's, most of these hoods are the formers.

1978 was the first year that aftermarket sheet metal (from Taiwan) was available in the US .. FoMoCo sued the suppliers for using Ford part numbers.

Sorry, I guess I didn't make any sense - I was meaning to say that with the 77-79 style grille, the Ford lettering was moved to the hood, before that it was part of the grille, hence no holes. I didn't realize that all the OE replacement hoods were sans holes, though, I thought it was available as a different part number - that in itself explains a lot.

You made the same mistake again.

Look at the parts catalog pic I posted (post #9). 1973/77 FORD letters located in grille frame. 1978/79 FORD letters located on the hood.

Weren't the low-boy '77s the new style grille? I had a couple that were titled as '77s , didn't realize the split in the parts book was at the model year - that makes more sense, though. Okay, '78 - 79.
