I am buying a new F450 this week, and I can’t decide on the one I should get. Narrowed it down to two choices
2008 F450. 6.4 124,000 miles
2011 F450. 6.7. 237,000 miles.
They are are the exact same price. Both in relatively the same condition. The truck won’t be used as a daily driver. I need it to tow a 16,000lb 5th wheel, across country if ever desired. Does it really boil down to which motor?
I have never read a single post/ article supporting the purchase of the 6.4 diesel, no matter the condition of the truck or the price. Seems the 6.4 for cross country towing may be a unnecessary risk, as other pre purchase options appear available. I have searched high and low, as 6.4s are priced very low compared to the 7.3 and 6.7. The 6.7 has been in production for almost a decade, the 7.3 was in production for well over a decade, the 6.4 was pulled from production in just 3 years.
I will echo the sentiments on the 6.4L. Don't just stay away...run away. You can't pay me to own one.
The 6.4L was only produced for 3 model years (2008-2010) for a reason. It was the gap between the 6.0L and Ford's 6.7L. The 6.4L is based off of the 6.0L and I hear that just about anything that needs to be done to the engine outside of fluid changes will require the cab to be lifted.
I was at a skills center (auto hobby shop) on a military base working on my 7.3L and there was a guy working on his 6.4L next to me. I took a peek over at it and there is no room under the hood to do anything. That engine fills up every bit of the engine compartment. No thanks.
Here's the way I look at which way to go, look at what's still driving around. How many of the 6.4 generation trucks do you see on the road? You can easily tell by the vent on the front fenders. Now the 6.7 era trucks (11 - 16) are still relatively new so there are bound to be more but I personally see very few of the previous generation trucks driving around. So few that when I see one I'm pretty surprised.
I echo what Mike said, I've never seen a thread that recommended someone buy a 6.4.
I also echo what Batman mentioned, the 6.7 you're looking at has a ton of miles on it for a 1st generation 6.7. Can you get service records? Was the turbo replaced? The HPFP / CP4 Fuel Pump? Not sure if the 450 has the same emissions requirements as the 250 & 350s do, if so, was the DPF replaced or has the truck been deleted?
the 6.4 is a combination of the most hated parts of the 6.0 and the 6.7 combined.
It's got he unreliability of the 6.0 with the emissions crap of the 6.7 added to it.
ehhh... Honestly, I wouldn't buy either of those for more than $2k expect to flip it. Too many miles on the 6.7 and the 6.4 is.....well....a 6.4. I'd take a 7.3 or maybe 6.0 with lower miles over either of those.
