I've got a 2011 F250 6.7L and recently I noticed a tapping noise, don't know when it started, but it's fairly loud, I'll see if I can upload a video. It sounds like it's coming from the center of the engine. Under very light throttle I don't notice a change, however, during more throttle I can't really hear it anymore.
I have a 2017 and it has the same noise for about 10k miles now. The research I have done says it’s normal. It comes and goes with no rhythm. It seems worst after an oil change. It sure don’t sound right to me. It sounds like a sticky lifter. But all the research I have done ford says it’s normal. They say Diesel engine have always made that noise, it’s just more noticeable now because they are so quiet. Not sure. Let me know if you figure something out. I will do the same.
So since I posted my ticking sound has gotten worst and more rhythmic. I took it in and did some more research. So ford says it is timing gear noise and normal. Well the shop I took it to said it is thrust washer failed. I found some videos on line about it as well. This is very bad. He said my aftermarket warranty company won’t take care of it because ford says it is not a problem. I am going to get my oil analyzed and cut my 2 micron filter open at oil change to inspect. If either of those show proof I will fight the warranty company. This is a very expensive repair that ford is aware of. They replaced the thrust bearings in model year 2015, which mine is. Problem is it was built 10/14.
