Core support compatibility.

I currently drive an 89 f250 7.5 with c6 auto 4x4. I am planning on swapping a 6.9 idi/ 4speed into my 89. I have an 84 f250 4x4 4 speed 6.9 diesel donor truck, could anyone tell me if an 84 diesel core support would be a direct bolt in to an 89 truck, or do I need an 86+ specific diesel core support? I have spent hours looking and can not find any relevant information.

Could you use the existing 460 radiator with the new engine? Hoses are on the same side IIRC, and it's about the same size.

I'm sure I could make it work, but the radiator in the diesel 84 is significantly taller and thicker than the radiator in my 89. For cooling reasons alone I'd prefer to use the one from the donor IF I can use the core support.

You will need a core support for an 87-91, the diesel radiator is much taller and has a deeper cradle to compensate. Also i would not recommend using the gas radiator on the diesel, it just doesnt have enough *** to cool the diesel on a good hot day.

Gas support

Sorry for the craptastic photos, they were taken with a craptastic phone

I have no intentions of using the gas radiator, it would only be a temporary thing if I absolutely had no choice. I can cut out the radiator support cradle from the 84 diesel core support and graft it into my 89 gas core support to make it work properly, but that is only if the 84 support wont bolt to 89 fenders and grille. Hopefully I can find the proper 87-91 diesel core support, but i need to call some parts yards in the area

yes you can use the 84 support on the 89 frame, but you will also have to use the 84 sheet metal.
the 89 nose will not bolt to the 84 support.

That's what I was being led to believe by cross referencing part numbers on a few different websites, thank you. I'll probably have to do some cutting and welding to keep my 89 bits in the right place, but hopefully one of the auto wrecking yards in WA will have what I need.

I would not see why you cant just cut the cradle part off the diesel support and graft it in to the gasser support. I cant tell from my crappy pictures but there is probably a seam in both core supports you can separate and re weld the cradle in so everything lines up exactly. Of course you could just whack the cradle off the gas support and that would clear the room for the diesel radiator. I dont particularly condone this but i have seen it done on quite a few cobbled up work trucks

If I can't find an 87 to 91 diesel core support, I will definitely be doing some cutting and grafting of the two.

That cradle is basically a radiator "skid plate" most probably never need it there but the lucky few that did and were able to save there radiator it was probably worth it!

Old post, I know. Will the 92-97 support bolt to the brick nose sheet metal? if not can a guy take the lower hoop and graft it onto a non ac brick core support?

no on the 92-97 support fitting in a 87 to 91. unless you are using 92-97 front end.
yes to cutting the bottom off and grafting it to the old support.
