What year did they start using chain driven transfer cases?

What year did they start using chain driven transfer cases?
Someone told me just the other day that the newer 4x4 trucks use chain driven transfer cases because it's easier to shift than the older gear driven ones. I'm just wondering what year they started doing that so I know what not to buy.
