100% agree. Mine leaked and I had to adjust it every couple months or as you say, it would be difficult or impossible to open. Add to this the fact that you couldn't put anything more than a few inches high up toward the front of the bed or the cover won't slide past it to close. I'm still finding the little rubber bumpers that went between the sections laying in my driveway or on the garage floor.
I recently traded in my 2017 for a 2019. For another $300 on the trade I sent that cover down the road with the truck. Even if I got zero extra I was NOT keeping that cover.

Peragon has a 90 day full money back guarantee, including return shipping, so I pulled the trigger on one a little over 90 days go... and it’s still on my truck.

It’s been great. As waterproof as my trifold fabric tonneau, no rattles or squeaks from the aluminum slats even with all the windows open at hiway speed, retracts and pulls into place properly every time, still looks new, and very easy to remove and install.

I run 6” of bed rail clearance with my 5th wheel and the Peragon frame sits 1/2” above the rails and reduces the open width of the bed a few inches. My Reese Goose Box pin box at 90 degrees gets too close for comfort to the tonneau frame, so I remove the entire assembly when I tow. With their Platinum install kit, it literally takes about 5 minutes to remove or install the whole thing.

I do find the need to keep the rear of the bed clear to allow cover retraction a little annoying, but I keep a cargo bar in front of that area to keep cargo up front. The loss of cubic storage doing that is pretty much the same as the space you lose with a retractable cover box, so in that case it’s a wash between the two designs. However, unlike a retractable box design, you can pop out just the cover assembly on the Peragon when it’s fully folded up, giving you full bed access when loading.

For a premium metal retractable design, the price can’t be beat either, it’s like half the price of the competition since they only sell direct to the public.

My vote is for the retrax. Here in Alaska it gets ugly cold; ive had it freeze shut and couldnt open it without damaging it. No tonnue/ cover is going to go without their issues, just kinda comes down to the pros vs cons of each. I will say the retrax is very easy to use. is very sturdy- i walk across mine and havent hurt it. and looks good imo. it takes 3 seconds to fully open up or bring to a close and can lock in place. i added a ladder rack around mine and it worked out nicely. its still weatherproof and has the added functionality i was looking for. i would say do your research before you buy. they aren't modular and cant be modified much once you pick your model. I wanted to add a tool box near the cab and keep the cover but it wouldn't have worked unless i started to chop it up. for now this is what ill have until i upgrade to a leer cap with windoors. All in all youd be very happy with a retrax from my experience.

I owned a Jack Rabbit from Pace Edwards, it worked good for 12 years until I bent the drivers side rail with my 5th wheel hitch. Parts were available but were pricey. If you are towing buy a truck body, sooner or later the trailer will strike the bedrail.

I have the Gatortrax MX retractable. It is very high quality and works well with my B&W 25K Companion.

My experience with my Peragon cover performance is the same as Lowmiler. I purchased this year, and also got their "ultimate" package which adds a few things. One of those is dual dead bolt so it's locked on driver & passenger sides. In that state it hardly moves when I push on it, so there's zero issue from wind while driving. Possibly the folks that have had that issue have the version that's only locking on the driver side?

Where we are in FL it didn't stop raining for about a month this summer and I had no leaking into the bed.

Mine doesn't open as smoothly as their marketing videos, but I attribute that to my install and that I haven't taken the time to fine tune it. Also, with the height of these beds I find myself wishing I was 2-3" taller when it comes time to open the cover.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Bakflip F1. It's just like the MX4 but the panels on the F1 are made of fiberglass reinforced polymer (FRP), a lightweight and heat-resistant material that is virtually dent proof.

I have one that I bought for my 2017 F-350 and it has been on 3 trucks so far, my 2017, 2019 and my 2020 and I expect it go be installed on my ordered 2022 F-350 .

I originally bought it from local Linex store. From what I understand they now have one that they sell under Linex brand that is made by Bakflip and carries a lifetime warranty. Their cover also includes a LINE-X coating on the top to prevent fading.

edit:
Found this on the Linex site:

"

LXP HARD FOLDING TONNEAU COVER

LINE-X® protected for maximum durability.

The Truck Gear by LINE-X® LXP Cover safeguards your cargo with heavy-duty folding panels that are reinforced with a LINE-X® coating for extreme resistance to damage. The proprietary LINE-X coating is completely UV stable which means it won’t fade over time even in the harshest sunlight.

Boasting the highest level of durability available, the LXP cover is virtually impervious to dents, dings and scratches. The LINE-X coated panels are flush mounted to create an extremely low-profile design. Rugged and highly functional, the cover can be used in multiple positions to accommodate cargo size. This cover pairs perfectly with a LINE-X spray-on bedliner for superior truck bed and cargo protection.
  • LINE-X PROTECTED: LINE-X COATED PANELS FOR EXTREME PROTECTION AGAINST DENTS AND SCRATCHES
  • COMPLETELY UV STABLE, NO FADING OVER TIME
  • FLUSH MOUNTED PANELS FOR EXTREMELY LOW-PROFILE DESIGN
  • RUBBER SEALS BETWEEN TONNEAU RAILS/TRUCK BED RAIL FOR INCREASED WATER RESISTANCE
  • ALLOWS VISIBILITY OF 3RD BRAKE LIGHT WHEN FULLY OPEN
  • NO-DRILL, CLAMP-ON INSTALLATION
  • RATED UP TO 400LBS (EVENLY DISTRIBUTED WEIGHT)
  • MADE IN THE USA
  • LIFETIME END-TO-END WARRANTY"
