Ignition switch restomod problems

I'm currently in the process of putting the power train and running gear of a 1995 F350 Powerstroke into a 1986 F250 XLT Lariat Diesel. I'm having problems with the ignition switch because I'm trying to keep the 1986 steering column and need to find a way to either adapt or bypass the switch. A friend if mine suggested trying to remove the plug on the harness of the 95 and wiring the 86 plug onto the harness but from what I've been able to tell the 95 has about 5 more connections so I'm not sure if that will work. Any suggestions are welcome especially if you have done something similar before.

What is wrong with the '86 switch? I am not following what the problem is here.

The 86 switch is an 11 pin switch while the 95 is a 16 pin connection

Okay and...? Are you swapping the PSD dash into your 86?

Just get an EVTM for yours for what pins do what. I can take you a picture of my EVTM page from a '96 if it will help. My guess is more courtesy **** involved.

The engine harness is beyond simple for that 7.3, it is not much different than an EFI truck.

You need to look at the specific differences in the wiring diagrams of the two.

You may be able to connect multiple wires together if they do not actually pull power at different times during the rotation of the switch.

Hard to explain, but hopefully you understand what I am trying to say...

I have all the shop manuals for both trucks so as long as I'm able to figure out what I can with together then that will get rid of my problem, right? I'm mainly just worried about accidentally frying the harness if I do it incorrectly, however if it is as simply as you guys are saying then I don't think it will be as much of a problem. And I am planning on using the PSD gauges in a custom dash.

You are way overthinking the complexity of this swap. You need just a few sensors for the engine to run... MAP, oil temp, CMP, ICP, IPR, exhaust back pressure, and I think that is about it. I forgot to plug in the pedal and idle switch, still started fine. IDM hooks into engine harness. I would use the OE underhood fuse box to save wiring hassle. EVTM shows a few 12V you need for the PCM, most are switched.

Page 13-12 in the EVTM shows the breakout for the Diesel ignition switch. Most seems to be power distribution for this 9th gen body, probably both fuse boxes and for sure the relay sets.

I cannot see what problem you have unless you are unable to follow the simple schematics in the EVTMs. All you will have to do is tap a few wires on your current switch to power up that PCM, you should have these already as they were either EFI or electric ignition by '86.

The 86 wasn't efi it was mfi and everything on it is really simple, I'm sure that you're right about me overthinking everything, I've never done a swap like this before and I just encountered the ignition switch difference and it worried me. I'm pulling as much wiring and all that as I can from the 95 to rewire everything but the bed on the 86 while also trying to keep the original steering column. But I feel much more comfortable moving forward with multiple people pointing me in the same direction.

My 88 was EFI, cast into the intake manifold...I have seen a few 302/AOD 86s in the yards with same batch fire setup. Mindless when Panthers were sequential port by 88.

If you have the parts truck handy, keep it until the end of the swap.

My 86 had a 6.9 IDI with a Banks turbo my great grandpa put on but it was almost all mechanical, had a mechanical fuel pump and injection pump but the motor mounts match between the two trucks so the only thing that's even remotely complicated about the swap is all the electrical. I'm keeping the floor dimmer switch as well as the headlight controls from the 86 but those are incredibly easy to patch into the PSD harness. Thank you very much for your input it's made me much more confident about swapping the ignition switches.

Glad I could help.

If you need pics and such right from the book, let me know. I am no EE, but can read schematics and have a 100% turn key truck if you need photos. Most of the nonsense wiring on mine has been deleted also...fuel heater, water in fuel, fuel restriction, exhaust flapper, etc.

Reseal that thing while it is out and do valve springs.
