Hey dudes, building a '97 460 for my '69 f100. Ditching the efi; it will get aluminum heads and a carb. Shooting for 550 hp. I have read about there being geometry problems converting 385s to roller because the lifters are taller.
Is it a bad idea? Usually roller cams can be more aggressive but I was looking at a comp XE274 flat tappet which seems more aggressive than the rollers. I'm not too concerned about the oil and wear, been running and breaking in flat tappet for years without issue with the proper oil.
Well the way I've always looked at it with rollers is if you have to have an aggressive ramp cam such as the Comp XE or Voodoo line then rollers are probably worth it if you want it to last. If it were more of a mild build where a less intense ramp (what some refer to as older designs) will do then I'd stay flat tappet especially if there were geometry problems with the valve train.
