Good evening, here I am 800 miles from home, and my starter on my 2016 6.2 at times continues to stay engaged. I replaced the starter before I left, and it did great, now doing it again. I am catching it and shutting it off as soon as possible. This morning it did it three times times in a row. Is there a electronic switch under the dash unlike older ignition switches? Thanks for the help, still have to drive from west palm beach to New York, back to bham al.
If you mean it cranks nonstop without the truck starting then I think that's normal for the starter. The truck isn't getting gas for some reason. Usually means nothing. Just turn the key to off, then to run long enough for the fuel pump to click off, then turn the key to start.
If you mean the truck is running but the starter won't let go of the ring gear then perhaps take apart the starter and lubricate it. I've had to do that with a couple newly purchased remanufactured starters.
It could be a Ignition switch that is dirty. When you turn the key, the inside of the ignition switch is not 100% on run when you let the key go. I had this happen to a vehicle I own.
If it seems like the starter is still going when you let go of the ignition. Wiggle the key or smack the key with out turning it. If it stops then it is your Ignition Switch. If it don't stop it still could be a ignition switch just really dirty or really bad.
I will get some wd40 and give it a shot in the switch, I hate to think I’ll have to change out switch in the parking lot at our motel here in west palm beach. Might get run off!
The starter on my '01 7.3 stayed engaged at a truck stop in Iowa (in the middle of a family vacation) and I swatted it with a hammer (with it engaged and the engine running) and it disengaged. I ended up purchasing a new Ford starter and swapping it on the road.
So, your problem may be with the actual starter, and not the engagement circuit or switch.
Yea, did that on the other starter, then I replaced it with a fomoco, the wd40 seems to have helped it, hasn’t done it anymore since. Leaving in the morning for New York, towing our sons Honda Accord on a dolly for what looks like 1400 miles, then back down to ala at end of week. We normally use our King Ranch expedition for these trips, but I bought this truck specifically to tow with, hoping to keep the miles off of our expedition. Thanks for everyone’s help!
