Originally had trouble with starter not disengaging. I replaced starter. When I hooked up the battery sparks flew and starter engaged with keys still in my pocket! I was told it was the solenoid. Replaced solenoid. Then starter was hanging up. Removed starter (had a broken contact) and replaced. Hooked everything up this morning. Started up and ran great first time. Let truck idle for about fifteen minutes.
I let the truck sit for a few hours. Went to start it again and starter engaged with key in "run" position. At least now it disengages when I turn the key off, but in run position the starter keeps cranking. What now!?!?! Ignition switch?
I would say Ignition switch or the the adjustment of the Ignition switch.
It may be slipping on the column when you turn the key.
You need to start with a test light.
Disconnect the push on wire (red wire with a blue stripe) on the starter relay on the fender.
Put a test light on it and see when it gets hot.
If it gets hot when you turn on the key drop the column down (two bolts) and look at the switch and its plug. Move the key and watch it, if it does not move and is not falling apart and the plug is not burned up replace the Ignition switch.
I took the advice of pulling the red/blue stripe wire. I also bought a new ignition switch. I dropped the column, but the switch looked fine. Replaced anyway. Had same trouble with starter engaging in run position.
I didn't think this would be an issue, but I opened the control box in the bucket and unhooked everything to paint it. Then the truck started normally.
The problem was the auxilliary start button in the bucket!!!
Thanks to everyone for the help.
I've an 86 F150 w a similar problem but have no idea where this aux start button is you mention - I've got the shop manual too so am wondering if my model is completely different OR I don't know enough to follow background - I replaced a battery and at some point had the run on starter problem - went through lots of starter solenoids - replaced the actuator on the steering column - very frustrating - bought a Motorcraft from Ford happened again on second start thanks
Hi Ralbach,
My truck is a one ton with a home-made steel bed and a bucket lift on the back. In the lift bucket is where the auxiliary start button is (I removed the old switch and things worked.....haven't replaced it yet). I doubt you have one.
One of my mechanic friends told me (before he knew about the aux. start) that I would have to get a test light, remove the push on wire from the solenoid and start testing wires until I found where the juice was coming from. Sounds like maybe you'll need to do that. I found my problem before I had to do that.
Sorry, and good luck with your truck.
