'79 F350, 400 ci Carburetor suggestions

Hey, Everybody.

I'm looking to replace/upgrade the current carburetor in my truck. The main problem is that I don't really know much about carburetors. I am really looking for someone to steer me in the right direction for what to buy, and also what the stock carburetor flange shape is?

I'm happy to post more info as needed, thanks.

Yup, pretty much everything on the truck is factory stock or oem replacement.

Me personally, I changed mine to an edelbrock 4 barrel intake nd carburetor. I was having increasing problems with the heat riser spacer, and most of my related emissions stuff attached to that were missing. I upgraded to the edelbrock carb and intake and it has never run better, and I got a slight increase in MPG, as the primaries are smaller.

351M / 400 motors from factory never came with a 4bbl intake or carb set-up. Didn't matter which vehicle you owned or its purpose. 2bbl only.

Unless you are going to do more work to the engine, the 2bbl in the correct size is just right.

Size guide. Going one bigger won't hurt.

A low compression 400 CID anything can get by with a good 2V. even if a 4V gained the improvement from incredibly gutless up to horribly gutless I don't see the point.

440, you'd be surprised what ripping off the emissions, zeroing the timing chain, and adding a 4 barrel carb and intake and dual exhaust will do for these things..... It aint no 440 six pack, but it'll give a 360 lean burn a run for its money.

my first new rig was a '79 f150 SWB 4x4 I bought in 1980 with a 400 in it. the week I bought it I stripped all the smog crap off and put dual exhaust on it. I still remember racing my buddy who had a '66 chevy pickup with a stock 283 the day I bought it and he blew my doors off. that was humiliating . I still own 2 Fords my dad bought new but they've been converted to 385 series engines and we still use them on the ranch.

I'll never understand why Ford chose to ditch the FE in favor of the vastly inferior 351-400 but I assume it was for cost savings. I've head emissions was the reason but that makes no sense they could have done the same thing to the FE.

Ford loves to change things. Always has, always will. Consistency in engineering/design comes from 1 company only, and that's GM.

The GM vs. Ford debate has been going on too long. Same as the 400 vs. 460. Another debate thread is the last thing this forum needs.

We're all driving Fords, we're all mostly using old technology too. In my books, it's a win-win regardless of whatever we're using for a power plant because we're driving something the EPA wants to get rid of. My point is, keep these old gems on the road. It doesn't matter what's under the hood.

I replaced mine because the 35 YO original was gunked up and running badly. '78 F250 with 400. An Autoline brand reman carb from Autozone has worked well for me... at least 6 years.

At some point I will re-build the engine for more power... more compression, cam headers ect. Then a 4 bbl or EFI. For now with stock type engine, the reman Ford carb works great.

I just put one of these on my 1978 F150 400 cid, automatic and love it! It was a direct replacement for my 2150 but I did buy a 1” spacer and ditched the EGR plate.
