Advice on check engine light

Hey all. Just drove the 2018 250 PS across country towing a 7k trailer. Everything went fine, but when I got to my destination the check engine light came on. Truck seems to be running ok. I don't have my OBD2 dongle and scanner with me. Is there a way to see what the code is for the check engine light without a scanner? If not, I'll run by autozone or some place in the morning to see what the code is. Thoughts? Thanks.

Stop by an auto parts store. Many will scan it for free.
Nevermind, just saw that you already were planning that.
Best of luck.

Thanks. I ran by autozone. The code is P2002. I pasted a description below, but it sounds like the truck isn't regen'ing correctly, particulate filter is clogged/bad, exhaust leak or bad sensor. Given the fact I just drove 1200 miles in 17 hours pulling a 7k trailer, i would imagine the truck had plenty of chance to regen. Ugh...guess I need to take it to the stealership.

P2002 definition

A P2002 trouble code is related to a diesel vehicle’s particulate filter that helps eliminate the dark soot that will naturally want to come out of the tailpipe.

What the P2002 code means

P2002 is a SAE controlled, diesel-specific OBD-II generic code for an efficiency issue with the particulate filter that is located on the exhaust. If the signal from the back pressure sensor being sent to the engine computer is not within the manufacturer’s parameters, the computer will deem the filter to be faulty, triggering the code. Bank 1 designates the filter that is responsible for the bank of cylinders that includes cylinder one.

What causes the P2002 code?

The most common causes for a P2002 are:
  • Faulty particulate filter
  • Faulty exhaust back pressure sensor
  • Exhaust leak
  • Poor quality diesel fuel

What are the symptoms of the P2002 code?

Because diesel particulate filters serve an emissions purpose, most P2002 codes won’t result in more than a check engine light or a DPF Warning Light. In some cases, poor engine performance and decreased fuel economy will result, and some vehicles may exhibit excessive visual emissions i.e. black soot.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P2002 code?

When dealing with a P2002, a visual inspection of both the particulate filter and the back pressure sensor and associated wiring will come first. After this, your mechanic will typically test drive the vehicle with an OBD-II scanner connected to track the back pressure sensor readings. If bank 1 appears to be sending different signals than bank 2, further troubleshooting of the sensor may be needed before determining the particulate filter should be replaced.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P2002 code

Poor quality fuel can often temporarily foul a diesel particulate filter. This is why a test drive at highways speeds is important to try and clear out the filter before replacing parts.

How serious is the P2002 code?

Leaving a P2002 on for an extended period of time can sometimes cause the engine computer to enter limp mode. This limits the top speed and reduced engine power to protect the internal components of the drivetrain.

What repairs can fix the P2002 code?

The most common repairs for a P2002 are as follows:
  • Clearing the diesel particulate filter
  • Changing the diesel fuel
  • Replacing the diesel particulate filter
  • Replacing the back pressure sensor

Additional comments for consideration regarding the P2002 code

Diesel particulate filters were not widely used until the mid-2000s, so if your diesel vehicle is older, it may not encounter a P2002.

I know nothing about diesels, but if the filter can be removed and shaken to clean it out somewhat like an air filter, maybe try that. Can’t hurt to try.

There are several sensors for the dpf now most likely one is going bad or a loose connection causing problems. Limp mode is a definite possibility depending on the actual problem would be good to find a dealership that can get you in before a trip back

Never having one, I know very little about diesel engines, but I did pick out the highlighted above in what you had posted. Considering you just took such a long trip, I assume you were filling up at places you hadn't before, so the chance you got some bad fuel has merits. Again, I know very little about diesel, but perhaps you might just be able to dilute the bad fuel with some top-tier fuel, or perhaps they have some kind of additive that can help clean it like they sell for gassers? I remember the first car I ever owned (an old K-car) had fuel issues and the solution I used to avoid a complete flush of the fuel system was running top-tier gas and a bottle of engine cleaner every 3-4 fill-ups for a little while. But, again with the caveat that I know nothing about diesels.

Bad sensor. Been a couple folks on here with similar experiences if I recall.
