yesterday while driving to work i started hearing a ticking noise coming from the motor. when i left work noise still there.I did not have time to listen for where it was coming had to go to 2nd job. took truck to work this morning no noise.came home for lunch and let my wife drive it ti work.she called me when she got to work and said the noise is back. so i went to pick up truck to take to dealership, i listened in parking lot and it sounds like it is coming from the top pass side of engine. went under truck not as loud.stopped home to call noise gone.tick goes up and down with rpms. almost sounds like a injector. any ideas? I would take it to the dealership but they will probably blame everything on the catback exhaust or the efans?

Reason: the truck is a 2005 screw,5.4
Could definitely be an injector. Or, perhaps the dreaded cam phaser issue? I'd get on top and see if you can isolate an injector. Also, I'd change the oil. These are ticky engines anyway and sometimes an oil change will quieten them down.
Ok, I had to type this response twice darnit, reboot the sever! I keep getting errors and time outs.
Yes, the cam phasers will tick. There is a TSB out for this issue on several models with 5.4L 3-valve engine. You can really hear it through the passenger side wheel well. I believe that my Wife's Expy has this issue. When I took it to the dealer to have them take a look the service manager agreed that it sounded like it could be the cam phaser. Later that day he recanted and said they couldn't ID the noise and that it was probably a rock stuck somewhere. After speaking with a friend ford tech, turns out they don't like to address this issue because the Ford Warranty reimbursement doesn't cover the time it really takes to fix it.
What oil filter did you use when you changed the oil?
I also think i have this same problem unfortunatly my dealer does not have a competant tech i am also the past few days noticed that a few miles after start up when i go to pull a hill the truck will stutter a little when acellerating up the hill only does it a few times seems like once you get down the road a few miles it wont do it any more. what do u guys think?
If the tick, ( more like a knock), is there at idle and when the motor is up to temp, it probably is the phaser. If the sound goes away after 1300 RPM, it probably isn't the phaser. The lash adjusters also make a ticking sound at idle.
no ticking today. yesterday the ticking did not go away above 1300rpms. it sounded like a ticking noise under the hood. under the truck sounded loud on the pass. side. sounded like it was coming from top back pass. side of motor.
